How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

An event needs at least 5% of the porta potties in each cluster to be accessible, with at least 1 per cluster, under 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. One bank of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit. One bank of 30 needs 2. Two separate banks of 8 need 1 accessible unit in each bank.

5% of units per cluster, rounded up, minimum 1. This is the legal floor; we recommend more for senior events.

What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor level with the ground, a door wide enough for a wheelchair, grab bars beside the toilet and inside space for a 60-inch diameter turning circle. It is larger than a standard unit, at about 65 inches wide and 65 inches deep. It needs a firm, step-free approach.

Accessibility rules for toilet rooms are in ADA section 603. We describe our units as wheelchair-accessible. Ask your venue or permit office whether a specific unit meets the rules for your event.

Where should an accessible unit be placed?

An accessible unit should be on firm, level ground with a smooth path from parking or seating. Gravel, thick grass and curbs make a unit hard to use. Put it at the end of a bank so the door has clear space in front. Keep the path lit for evening events.

Who else rents accessible units?

Families rent accessible units for a relative using a wheelchair or walker during a home remodel. Jobsites rent them when a worker needs more room. Seniors' events, church picnics and graduations use them for guests with canes, walkers and strollers. The larger floor also helps parents with small children.

For home use, see home project rentals.

Questions about accessible units

Is a handicap porta potty the same as an ADA-compliant unit?

We call our units wheelchair-accessible. Whether a site setup meets the ADA depends on the unit, the path to it and its placement. Your venue or permit office makes that call, and we can share unit dimensions for their review.

Is an accessible unit cleaned the same way?

Accessible units get the same pump-out, sanitizing and restock as standard units, on the same weekly schedule.

Can one accessible unit serve a small party?

A small private party can use one accessible unit as its only toilet. It works for every guest, and its larger floor helps parents with toddlers.

Can an accessible unit fit through my gate?

An accessible unit needs a gate or path at least 6 feet wide for the dolly and crew. Measure before you book and tell us about steps or slopes.
